Pretty much all ergonomic office chair mechanisms fall into one of two categories. Each chair will either be supplied with an independent mechanism or a synchronised mechanism. Understanding the difference between the two is the first step in deciding which ergonomic office chair is right for you.
WHAT IS AN INDEPENDENT MECHANISM?
Independent chair mechanisms can be quickly identified by the multiple levers that are found along one side of the seat, usually on the right-hand side. Each lever makes a specific adjustment to the chair ‘independent’ from the other adjustments. Most notably, the seat angle adjustment is independent from the back angle adjustment. Also, these adjustments have an infinite degree of control as the levers act to ‘clamp’ the components in place at any given angle within its range of adjustment. This in unlike a synchronised mechanism which can usually only be locked in 4 to 5 set positions. Independent mechanisms also have a weight tension control to set the resistance of the seat angle adjustment. However, the hand-wheel for this is usually tucked right underneath the chair and rarely requires adjustment.

Independent mechanisms are the best office chair if you are looking to achieve a specific sitting position with precise settings. They offer a wide range of adjustment and encourage good posture. WHAT IS A SYNCHRONISED MECHANISM?
Synchronised chair mechanisms (often called ‘synchro mechs’) usually have fewer levers because the seat angle and back angle work together in one ‘synchronised’ movement. This is usually set at a 2:1 ratio meaning that the back angle will adjust twice as much as the seat angle as you recline the chair. This creates a natural and ergonomic rocking motion which adapts to your working style. Synchronised chair mechanisms also feature an easy to use, body weight tension control adjustment. This enables you to adjust the resistance of the mechanism so that you neither feel that you have to ‘push’ to recline the chair, nor feel that it reclines too easily. When set correctly the chair will follow your movements whilst providing support. A synchronised mechanism can also be locked in around 4 to 5 set positions.

A coccyx cut out or ‘coccyx zone’ is a seat which has a small area of foam removed from the rear centre of the seat pad. This ‘soft pocket’ provides a discrete solution to coccyx pain or discomfort caused by scarring or other trauma and provides pressure relief to the tailbone area.
An air-flo seat cell in a dual chamber of air situated under a layer of foam in the seat pad. This air chamber provides a ‘reactive sit’ by giving extra cushioning to the sit bones and adapting to the movements of the user. This can help improve core strength and reduce sciatic pain.
