LOOKING FOR A DSE ASSESSMENT?

What is a dse assessment

Ergo Outlet’s team of qualified DSE specialists also provide a full range of DSE assessment services. Please contact us for more information.

DSE stands for Display Screen Equipment. Therefore, a DSE assessment is an employee assessment related the use of Display Screen Equipment. This includes equipment such as laptops, computers, and other electronic display devices used at work. Also commonly referred to as a ‘workstation assessment’ or a ‘visual display unit assessment’, a DSE assessment is a requirement for anyone who regularly uses display screens as part of their job.

See also DSE Assessments and Healthy Working on the ‘Solutions from HSE’ website.

Why are dse assessments important?

In short, DSE assessments are very important because they are a legal requirement. The UK government website states that as an employer, you must protect your workers from the health risks of working with display screen equipment, such as PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones.

The DSE regulations apply to workers who use DSE daily, for continuous periods of an hour or more. These workers are then described as ‘DSE users’. The regulations don’t apply to workers who use DSE infrequently or for only a short time.

By law, employers must:
• Provide a DSE assessment.
• Reduce the risks, including making sure workers take breaks from DSE work.
• Provide an eye test if a worker asks for one.
• Provide training and information for employees.

The laws and regulations still apply even when an employee is a mobile worker, a home worker or hot desking (regularly changing desks).

Please see: Working safely with display screen equipment on the HSE website.

The Benefits of a DSE Assessment

The primary objective of a DSE assessment is to reduce the risks associated with the incorrect use of DSE. For example, it’s well known that using DSE incorrectly can easily lead to pain in the neck, shoulders, back, arms, wrists or hands as well as fatigue and eye strain. The causes of such discomfort may not always be very easy to discern.

It’s important to note that a DSE assessment does not replace specialist medical care such as you would receive from your doctor or chiropractor. Rather, a DSE assessment would complement the advice you receive from medical professionals to help ensure your workstation meets your personal requirements.

Proactively managing your organisation’s DSE assessments not only helps to ensure that your business meets the legal requirements and regulations, but also benefits your business by:

• Improving the health and wellbeing of employees.
• Sustaining productivity due to reduced absences.
• Minimising the likelihood of compensation claims.
• Reducing administration costs.
• Encouraging positive behaviour and the adoption of DSE good practices.
• Contributing to improved organisational safety ethics.

For more guidance on how to comply with the health and safety DSE regulations, please see the HSE’s leaflet Working with display screen equipment.
